MSI Announce MPG 272URX QD-OLED with a 27″ 4K 240Hz Panel and DisplayPort 2.1

MSI have today announced their new MPG 272URX QD-OLED gaming monitor, one of the first OLED monitors in the World to offer a 27″ screen size with a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution. This marks a further increase in pixel density for monitor OLED panels, helping to improve image clarity and detail and finally offering a screen size and resolution combination that we know a lot of people have been looking forward to.
It improves pixel density significantly from the ~111 PPI of current 27″ OLED monitors which have a 2560 x 1440 resolution (like their previous MPG 271URX for instance). It also improves on the ~140 PPI of current 31.5″ 4K offerings (like their MPG 321URX) to now offer ~166 PPI. This allows it to offer excellent text clarity and image detail, making it very well suited to a wide range of applications and uses. It also offers buyers a smaller screen size if they want a 4K OLED monitor, but don’t want something as large as the current 32″ models.

MSI MPG 272URX QD-OLED Specs
The screen offers the following specs. It is 27″ in size (accurately 26.5″ like all the other 27″ OLED monitors currently available) and has a flat format. It’s using a new Samsung Display QD-OLED panel that we knew was on the cards when we provided our previous updates on panel roadmaps, and which is going in to mass production in early 2025. MSI say the panel is using a “5-Layer Tandem OLED Panel with EL Gen 3”. More info on the details of these technologies and on Samsung’s latest QD-OLED panels soon.

The screen offers a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution, 0.03ms G2G response time, 1.5 million:1 contrast ratio, 250 nits typical brightness (SDR), 178/178 viewing angles, a 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut covering 99% DCI-P3 / 98% Adobe RGB / ~138% sRGB.

The MPG 272URX has a 240Hz refresh rate which is supported by adaptive-sync for variable refresh rates from compatible systems with a 48 – 240Hz VRR range. It should be certified under both the AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ and NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ schemes by the time it’s launched. Familiar gaming extras like their ‘AI Vision’ settings and ‘Mystic Light’ RGB lighting on the back of the monitor are included, along with support for their ‘Gaming Intelligence’ software and user-updatable firmware.
For HDR the screen offers a peak brightness of 1000 nits (3% APL) and should meet the VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certification tier.
The stand offers a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate functions. This can also be removed in favour of 100 x 100mm VESA mounting if you’d rather.
OLED Care

Like their previous OLED monitors from 2024, the MPG 272URX has a custom heatsink and graphene film panel for efficient cooling without the need for an active cooling fan. It will also include their wide range of ‘OLED Care 2.0’ features for helping to mitigate the risks of image retention and burn-in, including multi-logo, Taskbar and boundary protection. It’s backed by a 3 year warranty that includes burn-in cover.
Connectivity, including proper DisplayPort 2.1a (UHBR20)

For connectivity the screen offers 1x DisplayPort 2.1a which is the latest generation of DP and MSI list it as meeting the UHBR20 speeds. This means the full 80Gbps bandwidth is utilised and therefore the ability to support 4K @240Hz without needing to use Display Stream Compression (DSC) at all. This will allow you to use things like NVIDIA DSR and DLDSR which are not available on current 4K 240Hz OLED screens which use DSC. You can find lots more information about DisplayPort 2.1 and some of its challenges and the reasons why this is attractive to users in our recent video here.

As well as DisplayPort 2.1a, the screen features 2x HDMI 2.1 (supporting 4K 240Hz with DSC from a PC, and 4K 120Hz for consoles) and 1x USB type-C (with DP 2.1a UHBR20 Alt mode, USB 2.0 data transfer and 98W power delivery). This USB-C connection offers a slightly higher power delivery than their previous MPG 271QRX model which had 90W.
There are also 2x USB 5Gbps data ports and a headphone jack available. A KVM switch function is also included allowing you to control multiple devices via one keyboard and mouse setup. PiP and PbP modes are also supported to handle multiple inputs at once.
