Eizo Launch the First Ever OLED Display in Their ColorEdge Line-Up
EIZO have recently launched OLED panel technology into their ColorEdge series for the first time. The ColorEdge CG3200X is a colour management monitor aimed at professional and creative users and features a 31.5” screen size built around a QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display, offering a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution. It also introduces a new and unique luminance and contrast control for post-production workflows.

In other specs this is a 31.5” screen (32” class) with a flat format. It offers and 3840 x 2160 resolution, 140 PPI pixel density, 0.1ms G2G response time spec, 60Hz refresh rate (which is unusually low for an OLED monitor!), 1.5 million:1 contrast ratio, 178/178 viewing angles, 300 nits brightness (SDR), 10-bit colour depth, and a wide colour gamut covering 94% of the Adobe RGB and 99% of the DCI-P3 colour spaces.
Controlling ABL dimming
HDR OLED monitors offer exceptional peak brightness and contrast, but because each pixel emits its own light, bright scenes place higher demands on power and heat management. To protect the panel, conventional OLED displays rely on Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL), which reduces overall luminance as more of the screen becomes bright, often causing visible shifts in tone and colour.
Eizo say they have developed a new and unique ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) control system, which is designed to support higher luminance thresholds, which will allow sustained brightness levels across more of the image before dimming occurs. There will also be two dimming modes on offer to suit different project requirements including ‘Highlight Dimming’ which reduces brightness in only the most luminous areas and ‘Uniform Dimming’, which adjusts brightness evenly across the entire screen. ABL Safe View is also on hand which shrinks the image area to 10% or 25% of the screen to prevent ABL kicking in to allow accurate HDR highlight evaluation.
Custom contrast control for SDR workflows
For SDR workflows, and since SDR content is typically created for displays with contrast ratios between 1000:1 to 2000:1, that content can appear differently on OLED monitors with significantly higher contrast. The CG3200X allows users to set a custom contrast ratio from 500:1 to 2000:1 in 100-step increments if they want, ensuring a more accurate and controlled representation of SDR content and supporting consistent results across viewing environments.
Text clairty optimization
High-contrast edges in text and fine details can also exhibit colour fringing on conventional OLED monitors. The CG3200X has a “dedicated correction circuit” to apparently help suppress these artifacts, resulting in cleaner, more natural edge reproduction they say. The panel ultimately has a triangular layout of RGB sub-pixels as with other 32″ QD-OLED panels available at this time, but with the high 140 PPI pixel density it should provide a very sharp image nevertheless.
HDR format support
For HDR content the monitor supports both industry-standard transfer functions – Hybrid log-gamma (HLG) for broadcast and Perceptual Quantization (PQ) for film and streaming production. These gamma curves expand the monitor’s ability to display HDR content for more precise images. There’s also a peak brightness spec of 1000 nits.
In addition, it also includes a ‘Sync Signal’ feature which automatically adjusts brightness, gamma and colour gamut based on the metadata if the incoming video signal to ensure consistent colour reproduction across different tasks. This is particularly useful when switching between SDR and HDR content.
Built-in calibration sensor
The monitor is also equipped with Eizo’s built-in calibration sensor which can be set to calibrate the monitor automatically at designated times, which eliminates the need for a third-party calibration device and ensures your screen stays colour-accurate. Calibration can be carried out using their ColorNavigator 7 colour management software, which helps users ensure consistent colour accuracy and precision.
Other features
The stand offers a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments and the screen is equipped with a detachable light-shielding hood to help prevent glare on the screen. The screen, which also incorporates a matte AGLR coating to reduce glare, comes with a 5-year warranty, and various OLED care features including screen saver, pixel adjustment and internal heat management functions to help prevent burn-in.
Connectivity
Connectivity options include 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.1 and 1x USB Type-C connection (with 60W power delivery and DP Alt mode). In addition there are 2x USB Type-A data ports, a KVM switch function and a headphone jack.
