MSI Announce the MPG 272QR QD-OLED X50 with a 500Hz Refresh Rate QD-OLED Panel
Originally published 2 Jan 2025, last updated 4 Jan 2025
This week MSI announced their new MPG 272QR QD-OLED X50 display, a new model in their ever-expanding and popular MPG gaming series of OLED monitors. This model offers a new super-fast 500Hz refresh rate QD-OLED panel, something that we saw rumoured last month as a new panel option from Samsung Display. The new monitor is 27″ in size and offers a 2560 x 1440 resolution along with an extensive feature set which includes the latest DisplayPort 2.1a (with UHBR20, 80Gbps speeds) connectivity.
MSI 272QR QD-OLED X50 Specs
The new screen is 27″ in size and has a flat format Samsung Display QD-OLED panel. The screen offers a 2560 x 1440 resolution, 0.03ms G2G response time, 250 nits SDR brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, a 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut covering 99% DCI-P3 / 98% Adobe RGB / 138% sRGB. The screen comes factory calibrated with a dE < 2 listed.
The 500Hz refresh rate is the highest offered from a QD-OLED panel, surpassing the previous 360Hz panels produced during 2024 (e.g. MSI MPG 271QRX, and exceeding the 480Hz speed (just) of LG.Display’s competing 27″ WOLED panel. Adaptive-sync with a 48 – 500Hz range supports variable refresh rates as well with the screen achieving the new VESA ClearMR 21000 certification.
DisplayPort 2.1a connectivity with UHBR20 speeds
For connectivity the screen offers 1x DisplayPort 2.1a which is the latest generation of DP and MSI list it as meeting the UHBR20 speeds. This means the full 80Gbps bandwidth is utilised and therefore the ability to support 1440p @ 500Hz without needing to use Display Stream Compression (DSC) at all. You can find lots more information about DisplayPort 2.1 and some of its challenges and the reasons why this is attractive to users in our recent video here.
USB type-C is also provided which includes DP Alt mode, data and 98W power delivery. There’s also 2x HDMI 2.1 connections, a headphone jack and 2x USB data ports.
The screen is backed by a wide range of ‘OLED Care 2.0’ features and a 3-year warranty which includes burn in cover. The stand offers a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate ergonomic adjustments.
VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black certification
Interestingly this new screen is listed as being certified under the VESA ‘DisplayHDR 500 True Black’ tier, a step up from the True Black 400 tier that OLED monitors have been certified under to date. This is achieved thanks to the new QD-OLED panel being used here, although we are pending some further information from Samsung Display on their latest technologies and generational improvements.
As detailed in the VESA performance criteria here, the True Black 500 tier requires:
- A brighter screen for a typical 10% APL test area – pushing up from 400 nits to 500 nits now – MSI list a 550 nits brightness for 10% APL in their spec.
- A brighter full screen luminance (at 100% APL) of 300 nits, compared with the 250 nits required from the True Black 400 tier.
- It must be able to achieve this using an additive approach, something that we already know is a strength of QD-OLED and its pixel structure.
So, this certification should signal some improvements in brightness capabilities on the latest QD-OLED panels it seems which we look forward to testing later this year.
Pricing and availability
This screen is expected to be released during Q2 2025 but pricing has not yet been provided, but we will update this news piece as soon as we have more information. You can check see all our coverage from MSI’s booth at CES 2025, including this screen, in our video here.
