Asus Debut Two New ROG Strix 32″ WOLED Monitors with New ‘TrueBlack Glossy’ Coating
Originally published 15 May, last updated 14 Aug 2025

Asus have announced today two new OLED monitors in their ROG Strix series. What makes these screens unique is that they will feature 32″ LG.Display WOLED panels, but come with a glossy screen coating. In fact it’s a new ‘TrueBlack Glossy’ coating they say which offers a zero-haze glossy finish as well as apparently offering matte-like glare suppression. The new coating will apparently offer the best of both worlds it seems and these screens are a follow up to their 27″ XG27AQDMG released last year. The two new models are the ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG and ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWG, two very similar model names (just an added “M” in one of them), with some slightly different specs and features on offer.
New ‘TrueBlack Glossy’ coating
Matte coatings have their devotees, as they diffuse reflections and handle glare very well for accurate colors and distraction-free viewing even in bright rooms with multiple light sources. They can however look grainy sometimes and not as clean and clear as a glossy coating, and because they diffuse reflections and light sources they suffer from black raise in brighter room conditions.
Glossy coatings have their advantages, and fans as well. Images can “pop” more, colours can appear more vibrant and blacks sharper and inkier when you use a monitor with a glossy coating. They don’t handle external light in the same way as matte coatings either and so can often retain their black depth better. However their drawback has always been having to contend with reflections and glare more, making them less suitable for brighter room conditions and day time use.

According to the Asus press release their new ‘TrueBlack Glossy’ coating featured on the ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG and ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWG has been “developed exclusively for ROG [and] goes above and beyond the experience offered by our first-gen WOLED panels while offering a measure of the reflection handling that you love from matte. The TrueBlack Glossy film pairs a zero-haze optical layer with an advanced anti-reflective stack. The zero-haze layer keeps black hues intact in any lighting, allowing the monitor to deliver deep blacks even in bright environments. For gamers seeking pristine image quality throughout the day, not just in the evening hours, these monitors are ideal picks.”
According to Asus the anti-reflective layer “results in a 38% drop in ambient reflections compared to previous-gen glossy WOLED panels, making it easier to get distraction-free gaming in rooms with multiple light sources.”
Is this the perfect glossy coating?
We believe this is a coating that is applied by LG.Display natively at the factory as opposed to anything Asus are doing in-house, and the panel aligns with our expectations of a 32″ glossy variant being produced this year. We are seeking further information about the panel and its coating finish so we can provide more information but it sounds particularly interesting if the coating can indeed offer a glossy finish AND anti-glare properties. Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panels offer that kind of appearance, although have problems with black depth retention in brighter room conditions.
We will be keen to see how this new coating finish performs in practice and we look forward to measuring things like its black depth retention and ambient light handling in the future too, especially as compared with the previous glossy coating on the 27″ panel and compared with WOLED TV’s.
Update 19 May – We had chance to see the 165Hz version of this screen at Computex 2025, make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay bang up to date on further information, opinions on the coating and some demonstrations of the screen next to a semi-glossy QD-OLED and a matte WOLED panel.
Specs of the new screens

The WOLED panel used for each of the new monitors uses MLA+ tech to achieve excellent levels of brightness Asus confirm, and our understanding (as per our recent LG.Display WOLED roadmap video) is that this is a variant of the Gen 3 panel produced last year in this size, now with a natively glossy coating from the LG.Display factory. It’s not one of the newer Gen 4 Tandem RGB structure panels.
The screens will offer a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution, 0.03ms G2G response time and will be certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black tier for HDR performance. We expect them to offer a 1300 nits peak brightness spec in line with LG.Display’s other modern MLA+ WOLED panels for monitors.
Gaming features and refresh rate
This information was the wrong way round in the original Asus press release, but now that the official product pages are live, and we’ve also been sent a sample for review we can correct the model names and align them to their relevant specs.
- The XG32UCWG (without the M) has a lower refresh rate of 165Hz, with dual-mode support bumping that up to 330Hz.
 - The XG32UCWMG (M model) has a higher 240Hz refresh rate with dual mode support at 480Hz.

Both models offer adaptive-sync support for VRR and include certification under the NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ schemes. ROG AI Gaming technology helps to round out the feature set of these two monitors, giving you access to Dynamic Shadow Boost and Dynamic Crosshair. Toggle Dynamic Shadow Boost, and it’ll automatically scan the scene and brighten overly dark areas without overexposing lighter ones, giving you a competitive advantage in low-light environments. Dynamic Crosshair adds a crosshair and dynamically adjusts its color to one that offers high contrast against the background for enhanced accuracy.

ROG OLED Anti-Flicker 2.0
To help in VRR gaming situations, the screens also include ROG OLED Anti-Flicker 2.0 which “uses a luminance compensation algorithm to dynamically boost pixel brightness based on real-time detection of the panel’s refresh rate. This results in a more uniform visual image and up to 20% less perceived on-screen flicker, compared to models using previous-gen QD-OLED panels.”
Dual-mode ‘Frame Rate Boost’
Dual-mode support via Asus’s “Frame Rate Boost” function is offered on both models as well, allowing you to double the refresh rate (330Hz on the XG32UCWG and 480Hz on the XG32UCWMG) if you drop the resolution to 1920 x 1080, allowing you to prioritise frame rates and speed for certain gaming situations. If the display’s 32-inch diagonal feels a bit large for competitive play, activate the optional Aspect Ratio Control to replicate 24.5″ or 27″ screen sizes as well.
Updated stand design for more desk space

For more practical gaming setups Asus have also minimized the footprint of the stand on these new screens and it is now 60% smaller Asus say. Importantly, the stand depth is reduced by 30%, so they don’t protrude as far forward into the space you might prefer to leave open for your mousing hand.
Connectivity options
For connectivity there are 1x DisplayPort 1.4 (with DSC) and 2x HDMI 2.1 connections provided, along with 1x USB type-C (with DP Alt mode, data and 15W power delivery). Some people may be disappointed with the lack of a modern DP 2.1 connection, especially now that is becoming more widely used and graphics cards are finally available with full UHBR20 support. This is likely because the screens are part of their ROG Strix range of monitors, as opposed to their top-end ROG Swift range, and is a choice to help keep costs and retail pricing lower.
If you’re worried about missing features like DSR/DLDSR, custom resolutions or issues like slow Alt-tabbing, you may want to check out our latest article/video about DisplayPort 2.1 here.
There are also 2x USB data ports on offer and an Auto KVM function. The USB-C power delivery is fairly low by todays standards, but positioned as suitable for charging a phone from the port as opposed to powering laptops with a single cable connection.
Burn-in protection including Neo Proximity Sensor
Both of the new screens feature custom heatsinks and internal layouts meticulously designed for heat dissipation, and so offer a fan-less design. Their latest OLED Care Pro feature set and Neo Proximity Sensor are featured as well, something we looked at in more detail in our recent article here.
The Neo Proximity Sensor detects your presence using time-of-flight calculations to make sure that the monitor only displays an image when you’re actively using it, saving energy and reducing the risk of burn-in when you’re not. When you come back to your PC, your content will return right away. As with Asus’s earlier proximity sensing solutions, you’re able to adjust the detection distance to suit your personal preferences, and our latest optimizations allow the sensor to better account for users who get very still when they’re fully immersed in a game.
