Following on from the initial teaser news in November 2023, MSI have now launched the product page for one of their forthcoming QD-OLED gaming monitors. The MSI MPG271QRX QD-OLED. We now have a more complete view of specs and features to share. The MPG271QRX QD-OLED is a 27″ sized screen which offers a 2560x 1440 resolution and a 360Hz refresh rate combined. It’s built around Samsung Display’s latest QD-OLED panel, which went in to mass production recently.

MSI MPG271QRX QD-OLED Specs

The screen is 27″ in size and has a 2560 x 1440 resolution. It’s flat in format (not curved) and has a 0.03ms G2G response time, 1.5 million:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 typical brightness (SDR), 178/178 viewing angles, 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut covering 99% DCI-P3 / 98% Adobe RGB / 138% sRGB. The screen also comes factory calibrated with a dE <2 listed.

There is a 360Hz refresh rate which will be the highest currently available from any OLED monitor, although we do know that faster 480Hz OLED panels are coming later in the year too. This 360Hz is supported by adaptive-sync for VRR from compatible NVIDIA and AMD systems. The screen has also been certified under VESA’s ‘ClearMR 13000’ scheme although no AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-sync certifications are mentioned.

The screen is built around a third-gen QD-OLED panel which features the updated pixel structure and shape carried over from gen 2 last year that helps improve text clarity compared with gen 1 panels. We’ve seen this second gen in action already on the Samsung Odyssey OLED G95SC and Asus ROG Swift PG49WCD that we’ve reviewed.

HDR Capabilities

Being an OLED panel the screen is well placed to handle HDR content, with per pixel level dimming to avoid halos and blooming. It can also fully switch off individual pixels to create true blacks and a basically infinite contrast ratio, although as we established in our recent study this is impacted quite a lot on QD-OLED panels depending on your ambient lighting conditions. MSI do not list a peak brightness spec on their website, but we expect this to reach ~1000 nits for HDR. IT has been certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black tier (not to be confused with HDR400 for LCD’s) as well.

OLED Panel Care

MSI promote the use of graphene film with Custom Heatsink on this monitor to hopefully help with heat dissipation, reduce the risk of image retention and prolong lifespan. It also has a fan-less design which is good news, and features the company’s ‘MSI OLED Care 2.0’ functionality. This includes a few interesting features we’ve not really seen before in this space.

There’s the ‘boundary protection’ feature which adjusts the brightness of the boundary between two images, or between an image and the background after a certain number of seconds to minimise the risk of image retention along defined edges. There’s also the ‘taskbar detection’ which auto detects the location and size of the taskbar, and dims the luminance for that area a bit to help reduce the risk of burn in. ‘Multi-logo’ detection is also featured to dim any logos or static elements it detects on the screen.

Connectivity

The screen offers 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.1 and 1x USB type-C (with DP Alt mode and 90W power delivery) connections for video, along with 2x USB data ports and a headphone output. MSI say specifically on the product page that the screen has HDMI 2.1 ports with the full 48Gbps bandwidth and support for 4K 120Hz, VRR and ALLM too. KVM functionality is also supported to allow control of two connected systems via a single keyboard and mouse.

Pricing and Availability

The screen is starting to appear now for pre-order on some regional Amazon sites, check out availability and pricing for your region here on Amazon. It’s also available to pre-order in the US from Newegg here.
