LG.Display Confirm Successful Development of a 720/540Hz 4th Gen WOLED Panel Coming Later This Year

Conveniently (and perhaps not so coincidentally) following on from our news yesterday, LG.Display have officially announced today that they have “successfully developed a 540Hz OLED monitor panel – surpassing the highest refresh rate currently available – and plans to unveil it soon.” This is the upcoming 4th Gen WOLED panel that we know will be utilised in an upcoming monitor from Chinese Manufacturer SDC, as well as a so-far not officially announced model from Asus that we were told about at Computex 2025 in May.

The 27″ 1440p resolution panel will feature LG.Display’s latest ‘Primary RGB Tandem’ panel technology offering improvements in brightness and colour performance compared with previous WOLED monitor panels. With the LG.Display press release today, we also have some additional information about this upcoming panel, as well as news on another 4th Gen WOLED panel that will be produced even sooner.

540Hz WOLED will be the fastest OLED panel to date

LG.Display say in the press release that: “Exceeding a 500Hz refresh rate had been considered a virtually unbreakable threshold due to the associated steep drop in picture quality. LG Display has successfully overcome this limitation by developing and applying a new proprietary algorithm. The 540Hz refresh rate goes beyond even the highest standards envisioned by professional gamers for OLED gaming monitors.”

The upcoming 540Hz panel will surpass (slightly) the recently launched 500Hz QD-OLED panels from Samsung Display, starting to appear in monitors from various manufacturers already. These should be hitting the market from around July time. LG.Display’s competing panel will offer a further boost to refresh rates in the ongoing battle to offer the best specs and fastest panels.

Other specs for the new 540Hz panel

This new panel will offer a 27″ screen size (accurately 26.5″), 2560 x 1440 native resolution, 0.03ms G2G response time, 99.5% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage, 1500 nits peak brightness for HDR (1.5% APL) and certification under the VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black tier. The native 540Hz refresh rate will allow the screen to be certified under the VESA ClearMR 21000 tier as well.

Further information confirmed for 720Hz dual-mode

We talked in our recent news piece about the possible configuration for the panel’s 720Hz refresh rate mode which we found out about from SDC’s spec for their upcoming Flash-540-META monitor. The official LG.Display press release confirms that it will utilise their “Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR) technology to enable ultra-high refresh rate modes of up to 720Hz in HD resolution.”

The “HD” acronym represents “High Definition” and is usually used to represent a resolution of 1280 x 720, as opposed to “FHD” which represents “Full HD” and a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The press release seems to confirm then that the 720Hz refresh rate mode will only operate at a low 1280 x 720 resolution, which seems to be very low and could be considered of very questionable value for most users, outside of some very specific competitive gaming and esports titles. Although considering it will be extremely challenging to push up to 720 fps, perhaps that will be a useful mode for niche gaming requirements on that basis as it will make driving frame rates easier.

Production timescales

The press release confirms that “with major global set manufacturers having completed launch evaluations, LG Display plans to begin mass production of its 540Hz Gaming OLED panel in the second half of this year.” This means we might see monitor releases towards the end of the year, perhaps in time for Christmas. More information on monitor releases when we get it.

You can find all the further information we have so far at the following links for the monitors from SDC and from Asus.

Production has also begun for their first 4th Gen WOLED panel

The press release also states that LG.Display have “successfully begun mass production of the world’s top OLED monitor panel, incorporating its latest proprietary technology as the company accelerates its push into the premium monitor panel market.” Their 4th Gen ‘Primary RGB Tandem’ WOLED panel will offer a 27″ screen size, 2560 x 1440 resolution and a 280Hz refresh rate. We know of one screen announced so far that will use this panel which is the Gigabyte MO27Q28G announced at Computex this year in May.

With panel mass production now under way, the originally touted release date of July/August for the Gigabyte monitor seems likely, although it’s likely to be more August than July we’d expect.
