Asus Unveil the ROG Swift PG27UCWM with a 27″ 4K Tandem WOLED Panel and RGB-stripe Pixel Layout

Asus teased the arrival of this screen recently on their social media channels and we can now unveil official information about this exciting new OLED monitor that will be on show at CES this week. The ROG Swift PG27UCWM is a new 27″ sized screen built around a brand new 4th Gen Tandem WOLED panel from LG.Display that we saw announced recently, offering a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution for the first time from this panel technology in this size, along with (also for the first time) an RGB-stripe sub-pixel layout. This is designed to offer improved text and image clarity compared with earlier RGWB panels, and combined with the high pixel density of ~166 PPI, should offer amazing image clarity and sharpness. The screen offers a 240Hz native refresh rate along with a dual-mode function that allows you to boost that to 480Hz at a lower 1080p resolution.

Asus ROG Swift PG27UCWM Specs

The screen is 26.5″ in size (27″ class) and has a flat format. It’s built around a 4th Gen Primary RGB Tandem WOLED panel (now simply called ‘Tandem WOLED’ by LG Display). It offers a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution, 166 PPI pixel density, 0.03ms G2G response time, 99% DCI-P3 colour gamut, 10-bit colour depth and factory calibration with dE <2.

Other specs are not listed at this time but we know from the information provided by LG Display that the screen should meet the VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black tier, and Asus confirm on their spec slide (above) that it will support Dolby Vision HDR content as well as the normal HDR10 content.

The screen offers a 240Hz native refresh rate along with a dual-mode function that allows you to boost that to 480Hz at a lower 1080p resolution. Adaptive-sync will support VRR from compatible systems.

RGB-stripe Layout and Brightness Specs

The use of an RGB-stripe sub-pixel structure without the added white sub-pixel, as well as the significantly increased pixel density means that brightness won’t be as high as some of LG Display’s other recently launched Tandem WOLED panels. Asus don’t list the brightness specs but we’ve been told by LG Display that the panel will offer 250 nits brightness for SDR, along with 1000 nits peak brightness (1.5% APL) for HDR, 500 nits at 10% APL and 250 nits at 100% APL.

With only RGB sub-pixels now available, this will also offer an “additive” approach to colour brightness, which should mean we get higher colour volume in HDR – i.e. colours will be maintained even at maximum brightness. This will behave differently to previous WOLED panels where the white pixel would be used to boost brightness, but this can lead to some washout of colours and “volumetric collapse” when considering colour volume for HDR for lower APL scenes. Asus state “up to 27% larger colour volume, especially at high luminance levels, to give gamers richer, more vibrant colours.”

Design and Connections

The screen has a new design aesthetic, somewhat similar to the ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W we saw towards the end of last year, but now in a black finish instead of silver. It will include Asus’ OLED Care Pro features and Neo Proximity Sensor, along with modern connectivity which includes 1x DisplayPort 2.1a (UHBR20 tier) and 1x USB type-C (with DP alt mode and 90w power delivery). HDMI 2.1 should also be available. While not listed on the press release we’d expect to see a KVM switch and PiP/PbP included as with their other recent OLED models in this range.
