VESA Introduce DisplayHDR True Black 1400 Certification for Future OLED Displays

VESA have raised the bar for OLED HDR display certification by announcing a new flagship performance tier in their DisplayHDR True Black specification, to help accommodate the latest emerging OLED display specs and capabilities. The new 1400 performance tier for VESA’s DisplayHDR True Black standard will award certification to those displays which reach at least 1400 nits luminance (10% APL) whilst maintaining black levels as low as 0.0005 cd/m². The new tier will also raise full screen luminance (100% APL) to 700 nits.
DisplayHDR True Black 1400 Specs
The Video electronics Standards Association (VESA) DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black specifications have been around a while and play an important role to the display industry and consumers, providing a rating to indicate how well a display handles HDR content such as colour, brightness and contrast. This latest update to the DisplayHDR True Black standard adds a new 1400 luminance performance tier (highest tier previously was 1000 tier) to validate new OLED displays that provide the same extremely deep black levels of the other True Black performance tier, but with higher luminance levels. According to VESA’s press release it will also enhance HDR content in different viewing environments, including brighter room conditions.

Roland Wooster, Chairman of the VESA task group responsible for DisplayHDR True Black states…”OLED display technology continues to advance rapidly, and VESA’s certification programs must evolve alongside it to address meaningful improvements in display performance. DisplayHDR True Black 1400 establishes a new premium tier that recognizes the latest advances in OLED HDR performance while giving creators and consumers confidence that certified displays can deliver exceptional image quality. This new tier represents an important step forward for HDR content creation and premium viewing experiences.”
The first products will be showcased soon, and during H2 2026

The first displays to be certified with this standard will be showcased at the Bilibili World event in Shanghai, China, which is being held 10 – 12 July 2026. This will include Lenovo’s notebook PC, the Yoga Pro 16.
Samsung Display have also said that they will showcase new products featuring select panels qualified for the newly announced DisplayHDR True Black 1400, alongside a broader portfolio of OLED and QD-OLED panels spanning multiple DisplayHDR True Black tiers, at various exhibitions in the second half of the year.
For now these are expected to be laptop and smaller panels, with monitor panels only really just reaching the True Black 600 tier in recent times with the latest announcements at Computex. We did also see a proof of concept from LG Display with a True Black 1000 capable monitor panel at the event, but no monitors have been announced using that panel yet. As soon as we get more information on monitors that reach these impressive luminance levels we will provide you with all the details so stay tuned.
