Just when you thought refresh rates couldn’t get any faster Philips and AOC have introduced newly developed monitors capable of reaching mind boggling speeds of 1000hz! The Philips Evnia 27M2N5500XD and the AOC AGON Pro AGP277QK, have recently been showcased in China, and are set to feature a 27” sized IPS panel with 1440p resolution and native 500Hz refresh rate. A dual mode function means you can double your refresh rate to a massive 1000Hz, but only when switching to a much lower 720p resolution. This is the same approach we’ve seen recently on some 540Hz / 720Hz OLED monitors.

Dropping to a HD resolution will undoubtedly affect the image quality but what it will lack in visuals, it could make up for in exceptional motion clarity and speed, which should appeal to all those competitive esports gamers out there where every second counts.

As there are no official product pages for either of these screens yet that we’ve seen, full specs are somewhat scarce. What we do know is that these 27” screens, built around IPS LCD technology panels with a native 2560 x 1440 resolution and will also boast 1ms G2G response time spec, 2000:1 contrast ratio, wide colour gamut, a factory calibrated Delta E<2 accuracy and will be certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 400 tier. So don’t expect any real HDR hardware capabilities here.

Being part of the Evnia series and AGON Pro series respectively we expect these displays to feature the usual array of top quality gaming features. We also anticipate both to have a fully ergonomic stand for user comfort.

Is IPS really going to be fast enough?

We are sceptical about whether these IPS LCD panels are really going to be able to keep up with the frame rate demands of 1000Hz when it comes to pixel response times, they will need to be able to reliably keep <1ms G2G for that, which seems very unlikely based on what we’ve seen from this technology in the past. The super-high refresh rates in the LCD space tend to be most effective on ageing TN Film panels, such as the wide range of 600Hz+ models we saw unveiled earlier this year, with OLED panels really offering the best response times that make pushing for higher refresh rates viable. Anyway, we will see how these perform once they are released.

We are keen to know more about these panels and hopefully we will be in a position to provide you with the full lowdown in the not too distant future. Needless to say we are also very keen to get our hands on one of them so we can see how the 1000Hz measures up so watch this space for further updates.
