Samsung Display Announce QuantumBlack™ Branding for Their Latest QD-OLED Panel Film

We’ve seen various brand names used over the last few months like Asus’ ‘BlackShield Film‘, MSI’s ‘Dark Armor‘, Gigabyte’s ‘Obsidian Shield‘ and AOC’s ‘DarkShield 3.0‘ – all of which represent the same panel film featured on the latest generation of QD-OLED panels. Those are all individual manufacturer brand names for the same thing, a film applied by the panel manufacturer Samsung Display at the factory which is designed to improve their QD-OLED panels in a number of ways which we will discuss in a moment. Today, Samsung Display have announced their own “official” internal branding for this film, which will be called “QuantumBlack”.

QuantumBlack™ film benefits

Whatever brand name you want to refer to, this new film is an option Samsung Display have made available on their 2026 QD-OLED panels, which many display manufacturers have understandably adopted for their monitors. It offers:

  • Improve black depth in brighter room conditions, along with reduced purple tinting you see on older QD-OLED panels.
  • Improved panel hardness from 2H to 3H which improves the scratch resistance of the panel and durability.
  • Improved reflection handling by 20% (according to Samsung Display).

Brad Jung, Vice President and Head of the Large Display Marketing Team at Samsung Display, stated, “QuantumBlack™ technology is a premium solution that further strengthens QD-OLED’s inherent advantage of delivering deep and perfect black, providing a differentiated level of immersion while also improving panel durability.” He added, “We will continue to introduce innovative technologies to create new user experiences across gaming and content environments.”

We’ll still continue to see each brand use their own marketing term for this we expect, at least in the short term, although maybe longer term they may switch to the general Samsung Display branding for ease and consistency. Their own individual brands were only really needed because Samsung Display didn’t have their own name for this at the time. You may have also recently heard about the new “Penta Tandem QD-OLED” branding, which is explained in our news piece here.
