LG 38GL950G with 37.5″ Ultrawide Panel, 175Hz and G-Sync
Original news piece published 20th Dec 2018, now updated below: showcased at CES 2019 between 8 – 11 January in Las Vegas. We already brought you the news of the planned IPS panel developments from LG.Display earlier this year in October, at which point we had some information about the exciting new 37.5″ panel that is to be used here – the LM375QW2. This week’s announcement of the 38GL950G marks the first screen that will make use of the new LG.Display IPS panel.
The new screen is 37.5″ in size with a 24:10 aspect ratio and curved format. It has a 3840 x 1600 resolution, providing a little more horizontal and vertical resolution space than the common 34 – 35″ sized 3440 x 1440 res models our there. Most interesting of all is that the new panel allows support for a native 144Hz refresh rate, and the screen has been combined with NVIDIA G-sync (confirmed as using a hardware G-sync module) for variable refresh rate support. The official LG spec page also lists a 175Hz overclocked refresh rate which is exciting news.
There are DisplayPort and HDMI connections provided, and to power the screen at this resolution and refresh rate this must be using the v2 G-sync module with DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 versions.
In other specs the screen has a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 450 cd/m2 typical brightness, 178/178 viewing angles and a 98% DCI-P3 colour space. This is using LG.Display’s latest ‘Nano IPS‘ generation of panel with a KSF LED backlight, offering a wider gamut than traditional LED backlights.
The 38GL950G also provides some common LG gaming screen features like the Sphere lighting system on the back of the screen, Black stabilizer modes, crosshair settings and the likes. There is a 2 port USB 3.0 hub and headphone jack provided also, and the stand is expected to offer tilt and height (110mm) adjustments.
There is no current word on release date or price, but the latest information we had on the panel development was an expected mass production in Q2 2019, so we wouldn’t expect to see this screen available until the second half of next year.

Update 26/4/19 – update from LG is that this screen will be a normal G-sync module screen as expected, currently anticipated to be released around Sept 2019 in the UK at least. There is a FreeSync version planned for later, but not likely to appear until 2020.
Update 17/6/19 – the official LG spec page is now available here. The response time spec is listed as 1ms G2G which has apparently been evaluated by UL (Underwriter laboratories). They act as an external third party to test performance it seems here, although it remains to be seen whether this 1ms can be achieved reliably, across a good number of transitions or only in the most extreme examples. It also remains to be seen whether this is only possible in the maximum overdrive mode, and at the cost of very high overshoot. We will see for ourselves when we have chance to test this screen. HDR is “supported” via the lowly VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification only, with no note of any local dimming support included sadly. We are still waiting on official pricing and release date information for this model.
Update 9/12/19 – the 38GL950G is already available to buy in the US at $1799.99 from Amazon.
