Dell U2724D and U2724DE 27″ Monitors Announced with the First 120Hz ‘IPS Black’ Panels
Following on from the recent news about their new 2024 range 23.8″ models, Dell have now announced their new 27″ models in their popular UltraSharp line-up. The U2724D and U2724DE will offer 27″ screens with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and like the smaller models, will be the first time these mainstream models will offer a higher refresh rate at 120Hz. The screens will also be built around LG.Display’s latest IPS Black panel technology, something that impressed us when we tested it with its improved contrast ratio and black depth. This will mark the first time that IPS Black is offered with a higher 120HZ refresh rate too, with previous panels being limited to 60Hz only until now.
The First Monitors with 5-star Eye Comfort
Dell is keen to promote the fact that they are “introducing the world’s first five-star certified monitors for eye comfort. This is a brand-new industry standard for eye comfort developed by TUV Rheinland, one of the world’s leading professional and independent testing service providers…Dell is the first in the market to introduce monitors with this highest 5-star rating certification.”
TUV Rheinland’s own press release tells us a bit more about this new certification scheme:
“The classification system developed by TÜV Rheinland offers consumers complete transparency in terms of test criteria and results, summarized in an intuitively understandable 5-point scale. The “Eye Comfort” certification process examines three technical dimensions (image quality, ambient light management, eye care technology) and 15 different test categories that have shown to have a significant impact on eye comfort. “Features like good image quality, high refresh rate and good ambient light management, such as intelligent brightness and CCT adaptation to ambient light, help reduce visual fatigue”, explains Stanley Liu, display certification expert from TÜV Rheinland. “For example, the higher the refresh rate, the smoother the image and the higher the eye comfort and the corresponding score.” Note here: Only if a screen achieves a 5-star rating in all 15 categories will the overall result also be a 5-star rating. Consumers can access a detailed presentation of the different test categories via TÜV Rheinland’s Certipedia certificate database. A corresponding QR code or the ID of the test seal is printed on the packaging of correspondingly certified products.
5 stars: What are the features of displays that are particularly easy on the eyes and comfortable to use?
“For example, a 5 Star “Eye Comfort” Certified monitor has a high refresh rate (≥ 120 Hz) and high color accuracy. It also has hardware to reduce blue light and flicker, as well as brightness and color temperature control for ambient lighting. These features enhance health protection and reduce visual fatigue.”
Dell U2724D and U2724DE Specs
Both new screens are 27″ in size and feature a 2560 x 1440 resolution IPS Black panel. This includes a 5ms G2G response time, 2000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 1.07b colour depth and a wide colour gamut covering 98% of the DCI-P3 colour space and 100% sRGB. The screen will also come factory calibrated in its sRGB, BT.709, DCI-P3 and Display P3 modes apparently with a dE <2.
The stand will offer a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments. A built-in Ambient Light Sensor is included that detects ambient lighting condition and automatically adjusts screen brightness and color tone setting.
Connectivity Varies Between the Two Models
Connectivity varies a little between the two screens. The D model includes 1x DisplayPort 1.4 (+1 DP out for Daisy Chaining), 1x HDMI, 3x USB data ports (one is easy access), 1x audio line-out and 1x USB type-C data connection with 15W power delivery (+1 USB-C upstream back to the PC). The U2724DE model also adds 1x Thunderbolt 3 downstream (with DP Alt mode and 15W power delivery) along with 1x RJ45 Ethernet connection and a KVM function. PiP and PbP modes are supported on both models though.

The Dell UltraSharp 27 Monitor (U2724D) is available November 9th starting at $479.99 (USD). Dell UltraSharp 27 ThunderboltTM Hub Monitor (U2724DE) is available November 9th starting at $649.99 (USD).
