BOE Latest Panel Development Plans – May 2023

We have some updates from LCD panel manufacturer BOE for their panel development plans. This is BOE as a panel manufacturer, as opposed to any specific monitor/display manufacturer, but it gives an indication of where monitors are likely to go in the future by looking ahead at the panel production plans. Please keep in mind that the production dates are not set in stone and may change, and there is then also a lag of several months before a panel is produced, then used in a display and launched to market. We have updated our panel parts database with all the new information we have as well as best we can.

Our last update for BOE was last year in July 2022, and some of this new piece is providing some updates on panels originally announced back then as well as some new information. If you missed it, a couple of months ago in March 2023 we published updates from LG.Display and AU Optronics too for their LCD panel plans, as well as a very interesting OLED monitor panel roadmap!

Updates on Mini LED Backlit Panel Development

BOE are focusing on developing new panel options with more local dimming zones for improved HDR experiences in the desktop monitor space. They are focusing on improving “light leakage” (aka blooming and haloing) through a combination of more dimming zones and improved operational algorithms. Mass production is already under way for various panels with 1,152 dimming zones, with 2K zones planned for production in H2 2023 and 4K+ zones planned for development in 2024. More details below:

27″ size with 1152 zones and 1152 LED’s (HDR 1000)

These panels are the more “entry level” options BOE are planning to produce, although still offer an impressive number of dimming zones:

  • 27″ with 2560 x 1440 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate – Originally is scheduled for production from Sept 2022, this appears to have slipped to Q2 2023.
  • 27″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate – was scheduled for production from Dec 2022, now slipped a little to Q2 2023.
  • 27″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate – scheduled for production from Q2 2023 as well.

27″ size with 1152 zones and 4608 LED’s (HDR 1000)

These panels will have the same number of dimming zones, but a higher count of LED’s making up each zone for potentially better dimming and reduced haloing.

  • 27″ with 2560 x 1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate – was scheduled for production from June 2022, now slipped to Q2 2023.
  • A new one not listed last time, 27″ with 2560 x 1440 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate – scheduled for production from Q2 2023.

27″ size with 2304 zones and 9216LED’s (HDR 1400)

These panels will have a higher count of zones and LED’s making up each zone for potentially better dimming and reduced haloing.

  • A new one not listed last time, 27″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate – scheduled for demo only from Q2 2023
  • A new one not listed last time, 27″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate – scheduled for demo only from Q2 2023

31.5” size with 1152 zones and 4608 LED’s (HDR 1000)

Now we’re getting in to some of the larger sized panels, more suited to 4K resolution and pushing the number of dimming zones further:

  • 31.5″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate – was scheduled for production from July 2022 but slipped a bit to Q1 2023
  • 31.5″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate – was scheduled for July 2022 production, but looks like it slipped a bit to Q1 2023

31.5” size with 2304 zones and 9216 LED’s (HDR 1000 and HDR1400 options)

  • 31.5″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate and HDR 1000 – was scheduled for production from Sept 2022, but slipped to Q3 2023 it seems
  • A new one not listed last time, 31.5″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and HDR 1400 – scheduled for Q3 2023 production.

31.5” size with 4032 zones and 16,128 LED’s (HDR 1000 and HDR1400 options)

The panels with this many zones and LED’s were talked about in last year’s update but it looks like BOE have perhaps changed the number for each as they’ve gotten further through development. Last year the 4K zone panels were listed as having 4608 dimming zones, now that is 4032. They were also listed last year with 18,432 LED’s making up those zones, now that is 16,128. Still very impressive of course, and we mention only to update on the expected specs. In this range they are planning the following:

  • 31.5″ panel with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate and HDR 1000 support – was planned for a possible Q3 2023 production in last year’s update, but now listed as a demo for Q2 2023, so expect actual mass production to slip somewhat (assuming the demo goes well of course).
  • A new one not listed last time, 31.5″ panel with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and HDR 1400 support – listed as a demo for Q2 2023 also.

Larger ultrawide panels

BOE are also planning to develop some ultrawide format panels in larger sizes:

  • A new one not listed last time, 34″ ultrawide with 3440 x 1440 resolution, a flat format, 165Hz refresh rate and HDR 1000 support. This has 1152 dimming zones and 4608 LED’s and should be in mass production now.
  • 34″ curved 1500R ultrawide (IPS-type) with 3440 x 1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate – this will have 1152 dimming zones and with 4608 LED’s, and was scheduled for production from Q3 2022, now listed as the tech being “ready”, presumably for mass production to commence.
  • 34″ curved 3800R ultrawide (IPS-type) with 3440 x 1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate – this will have 1152 dimming zones and with 4608 LED’s, and was scheduled for production from Oct 2022, now listed as the tech being “ready”, presumably for mass production to commence.
  • A new one not listed last time, 39.7″ ultrawide with 5120 x 2160 (WUHD) resolution, we believe a flat format, 60Hz refresh rate and HDR 1000 support. This has 2040 dimming zones and 8160 LED’s and is scheduled for mass production from Q3 2023.
  • A new one not listed last time, 39.7″ ultrawide with 5120 x 2160 (WUHD) resolution, we believe a flat format, 144Hz refresh rate and HDR 1400 support. This has 2040 dimming zones and 8160 LED’s and is scheduled for mass production from Q3 2023.

Other panels listed last year but not mentioned on the latest update (possibly scrapped?)

These panels have perhaps been dropped, or may still be in plan but just not being highlighted in the most recent update. More news on these as and when we get it:

  • 27″ with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate – this would have 1152 dimming zones but with 4608 LED’s, and was scheduled for production from June 2022 in last year’s update.
  • 27″ with 5120 x 2880 high PPI resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, 98% DCI-P3 gamut – this would have 2304 dimming zones but with 9216 LED’s, and was scheduled for production from Feb 2023 in last year’s update.
  • 31.5″ panel with 3840 x 2160 4K resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. This was listed as having 4608 dimming zones apparently (number of LED’s), and was planned for a possible Q4 2022 production start in last year’s update.
  • 31.5″ panel with 8K resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. This one would have “5K+” dimming zones apparently (number of LED’s not listed) and was planned for a possible H1 2023 production but sadly seems to have been removed in this new update.
  • 34″ curved 1500R ultrawide (VA-type technology) with 3440 x 1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate – this would have 1152 dimming zones but with 4608 LED’s, and was scheduled for production from April 2022 in last year’s update.
  • 44.5″ curved ultrawide 1500R (VA-type) with 5120 x 1440 resolution (32:9 aspect ratio), 60Hz refresh rate, 95% DCI-P3 gamut – this would have 1152 dimming zones but with 4308 LED’s, and was scheduled for production from March 2023 in last year’s update.

High Refresh Rate Gaming Panels up to 520Hz

There’s not much in the way of details of specs for these, but listed on the latest BOE roadmap are the following interesting gaming panel options, all based on their ADS (IPS-type) technology. There are a couple of panels in 27″ and 31.5″ sizes which offer a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution combined with a 240Hz refresh rate, and which are planned for Q3 2023 production.

Later on in Q4 2023 BOE are planning to develop a 27″ panel with 1080p resolution and 520Hz refresh rate, along with a 27″ 1440p option with 360Hz for a somewhat higher pixel density alternative.

In the ultrawide space there are plans to develop a 39.7″ sized panel with 5120 x 2160 (WUHD) resolution, a 2500R curvature and a 165Hz refresh rate. That’s listed for Q4 2023 production too.
