Apple Unveil Updated Studio Display and Studio Display XDR Models

Apple have launched two further models in their Studio Display range of pro monitors. The Studio Display XDR featuring a 27” sized 5K Retina XDR display and 120Hz refresh rate and the updated Studio Display featuring a 27” 5K Retina Display and 60Hz refresh rate are updated versions of previous models, now offering an improvement in overall specs and performance.
“Apple has led the industry in delivering the world’s most advanced displays for pros to do their life’s best work, and today we do that once again with the introduction of the new Studio Display family,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “Studio Display gets even better with a new 12MP Center Stage camera and powerful Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. And the Studio Display XDR is a huge leap forward for XDR technology, with a mini-LED backlight, 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, advanced color accuracy, and a 120Hz refresh rate, transforming workflows like filmmaking, design and print, and 3D animation. It’s by far the world’s best pro display.”

The screen is 27″ in size and offers a 5120 x 2880 “5K” resolution, which is considered by Apple to be “Retina class” on a screen of this size. On a 27″ screen it gives a high pixel density of 218 PPI. It also features an impressive 2,304 zone Mini LED backlight to offer high-end HDR performance and local dimming capabilities (which Apple refer to as “XDR”). It offers a peak brightness of 2000 nits ensuring the display shows brighter highlights and deeper blacks allowing the image to really ‘pop’ on the screen.
In other specs there is a 1000 nits brightness (SDR) and a wide colour gamut with wide coverage of the DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces, along with a 10-bit colour depth offering 1.07 billion colours. The 120Hz refresh rate is supported by adaptive-sync for VRR as well and offers a step up from typical 60Hz displays.
According to a report at FlatpanelsHD, Apple says that Mac models with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 and M3 support Studio Display XDR at up to 60Hz. Only Macs with newer or more powerful Apple Silicon chips support 5K 120Hz, including M2 Pro/Max/Ultra, M3 Pro/Max/Ultra, M4 and M4 Pro/Max as well as M5 and M5 Pro/Max.

There are a number of calibration tools and preset reference modes available to, so whether you are a filmmaker, graphic designer or photographer, you should have all the settings you need.

The screen has an all-aluminium enclosure and an attractive thin profile and comes with a stand which offers tilt and height adjustments. It also features a 12MP “Centre Stage camera” with “Desk View”, a three-microphone set-up and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.
For connectivity there are 2x Thunderbolt 5 ports (up to 120 Gb/s) with 140W power delivery from the upstream port, along with 2x USB Type-C ports (up to 10 Gb/s) available.

This screen is 27″ in size and is built around a 5K Retina display, offering a 5120 x 2880 resolution, 218 PI pixel density, 600 nits brightness (SDR), 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut with a high DCI-P3 colour space. There’s no Mini LED backlight on this version and the lower refresh rate of 60Hz refresh rate is supported by adaptive-sync for VRR.
It also features a 12MP Centre Stage camera with improved image quality and low‑light performance, which helps you stay in frame during video calls. In addition it features support for Desk View.
A three-microphone set-up ensures video calls and voice recordings are loud and clear and the addition ‘directional beamforming’ drowns out background noise so everyone can hear you. The updated six-speaker sound system helps deliver a more precise stereo imaging and according to Apple is the “highest-fidelity speaker system ever created for Mac”
The screen comes with a tilt adjustable stand only, however a tilt and height adjustable stand can be purchased as an optional extra. For connectivity there are 2x Thunderbolt 5 ports (with 96W power delivery) and 2x USB Type-C ports.
Nano-texture glass

Both screens come with a “standard glass” coating, and use ‘True Tone’ technology, an ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts the colour temperature of your display to your environment, thus providing a more comfortable viewing experience for your eyes.
There is also the option of having a “nano-texture glass” coating, which is suitable for brighter room conditions as the coating apparently “scatters light” to minimise glare and reflections.
Availability and pricing
Both these screens are available to pre-order now with a projected date of 11th March for dispatch. The Studio Display is $1,499 with a tilt only stand whilst a tilt and height adjustable stand makes the cost $1,899. The Studio Display XDR is available for $3,299. Both are available with the nano-texture coating at an additional cost of $300
