NVIDIA RTX 50 Series Graphics Cards Add DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 Connectivity Finally
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series of GPUs was finally unveiled at CES 2025 this week, and Asus have a wide assortment of next-gen graphics cards from ROG, TUF Gaming, and ASUS Prime available launching this year. We wouldn’t normally cover graphics cards much here at TFTCentral, but of particular interest was the support on these latest RTX 50 series cards for DisplayPort 2.1, featuring the maximum UHBR20 80Gbps speeds. This is finally being offered from NVIDIA graphics cards, and should definitely help drive up further adoption of the connection on future desktop monitors.
Asus ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 flagship cards
Asus’ new flagship ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 and ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 feature quad-fan designs for unparalleled cooling efficiency, giving overclockers plenty of headroom to push the limits of modern gaming. These cards use a phase-change thermal pad in lieu of thermal paste, boosting hardware longevity and optimizing heat transfer. The patented vapor chamber design, protective PCB coating, and metal frame construction make the Astral series the peak of premium offerings. You can even go for a liquid-cooled ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090 variant if you have ultra-ambitious overclocking plans.
ROG Strix GeForce RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti
Meanwhile, their ROG Strix GeForce RTX 5070 and ROG Strix GeForce RTX 5070 Ti feature the same phase-change thermal pad and protective PCB coating, plus vented exoskeletons, Aura Sync RGB, and more. DisplayPort 2.1 connections with UHBR20 speeds
The RTX 50 series features 3x DisplayPort 2.1a connections as well as 2x HDMI 2.1b. Recently VESA updated the spec for DP 2.1a to version 2.1b to account for new, longer active cabling options. As far as we know there’s no change to the DP connections required on graphics cards or monitors, and there are no changes to speeds, UHBR tiers and so on, and so these could just as easily be labelled as DP 2.1b. NVIDIA themselves state that the RTX 50 series has DP 2.1b with UHBR20, so we expect this is just a case of timing, with the Asus product pages and material all written before VESA made the announcement and amendment this week. The new Asus RTX 50 series cards all support DisplayPort 2.1 with the maximum UHBR20 80Gbps bandwidth.
The inclusion of DP 2.1 makes these new RTX 50 series GPU’s well-suited to support all the recent and upcoming monitors which have this connection, such as the new Asus ROG Swift PG27UCDM for instance that we reviewed recently that is the first Asus model to offer this connection.
