Review Now Available

Our review of the LG UltraGear Evo 39GX950B is now completed and live! You can find both a video format review covering all the key performance, features and a full technical written review which includes loads more additional data, info and comparisons.

LG 39GX950B Specs

The screen is 39″ in size (precisely 38.86″) with an ultrawide 21:9 ultrawide format and a more subtle 1500R curvature than their earlier 800R curve ultrawide OLED monitors. It’s nice to see that LG have listened to user feedback about wanting a more gentle curve on these ultrawide OLED monitors. The screen retains the vertical height of a 32″ screen while expanding horizontal immersion for both gaming and multitasking.

It offers a 5120 x 2160 “5K2K” resolution which delivers a ~142 PPI pixel density on a screen this size, roughly the same as a 31.5″ 4K OLED monitor. It’s is built around a 4th Gen Tandem WOLED panel and will feature the updated RGWB sub-pixel layout. With a high pixel density here, the text clarity should be very good, like it is on the 32″ 4K WOLED panels with the same RGWB layout.

There’s a 0.03ms G2G response time, 165Hz native refresh rate and a dual-mode function which allows a higher 330Hz at a lower 2560 x 1080 resolution for certain gaming situations. The screen is supported by adaptive-sync for VRR from compatible systems, with certification under the NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ schemes.

The screen has a normal matte anti-glare coating, although the panel manufacturer LG.Display have said that a glossy panel version is available for other monitor manufacturers to potentially adopt. No other models with this panel/spec have been announced yet.

In other specs there is a 335 nits SDR brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut with 99.5% DCI-P3 coverage. The screen also supports hardware level calibration as with LG’s previous OLED monitors, a feature unique in this OLED gaming segment to LG at the moment. For HDR the screen is certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black tier with a 1500 nits peak brightness spec (1.5% APL).

Connectivity and adjustments

For connectivity there are 1x DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20), 2x HDMI 2.1 and 1x USB type-C (with DP Alt mode and 90W power delivery) available. PiP and PbP modes are available for handling multiple inputs. There’s also 2x USB-A data ports and a headphone jack available.

The stand offers tilt, height and swivel adjustments and can be removed for VESA 100 x 100mm mounting.

AI Sound, AI Upscaling and AI Scene Optimization features

According to LG, “UltraGear evo’s built-in processor powers 5K2K AI Upscaling, intelligently enhancing content to 5K2K resolution from any device. Without additional GPU or hardware upgrades, it intelligently upscales content to deliver sharper detail and improved resolution”. That’s a feature we saw demo-ed at CES which looked impressive for sharpness the image and improving detail, and we look forward to testing this further once the screen is available.

AI Sound is another feature of this monitor which “intelligently separates individual audio elements—voices, effects, and background sounds—and adapts to gameplay for more controlled, immersive audio, creating a virtual 7.1.2 channel sound experience. Through 7W×2 built-in stereo speakers or headphones, voices remain clear even in intense firefights, while critical cues like approaching footsteps stay easy to detect during gameplay.”

AI Scene Optimization recognizes what’s on screen and automatically adjusts key picture settings such as colour temperature, colour enhancement, and sharpness to match each content type—including Office, Animation, Movie, Game, and Sports modes.
