Samsung Showcase Glasses-Free ‘Odyssey 3D’ Gaming Monitors at Gamescom 2024

We visited the Samsung booth at Gamescom this week and while most of the monitors on display were those we knew about, including their 32″ G80SD that we reviewed recently, there were a couple of new prototypes that caught our eye and looked particularly interesting. They had a couple of new glasses-free 3D displays you could try out, one in 27″ size and the other a larger 37″ size. Both had mid-tier refresh rates of 165Hz too, making them suitable for gamers.

3D Technology without the glasses

The new screens are simply referred to as “Odyssey 3D” at the moment, and they’re based on innovative LFD (Light Field Display) technology to create life-like 3D images on the display using lenticular lenses on the front of the panel which direct different parts of the image to each eye, creating a 3D image. This is achieved all without the user needing to wear any 3D glasses at all. This technology is combined with an eye-tracking camera built in to the front of the screen to ensure a clear and crisp image, while View Mapping technology adjusts the depth perception depending on your viewing position and line-of-sight. The screens can of course also switch to regular 2D mode if you want.

In the past we have tested Acer’s Spatial Labs monitors which offered a similar glasses-free experience, although at the time those panels were much smaller laptop-sized screens, and lacked high refresh rates so they were more aimed at creative work, 3D modelling etc as opposed to 3D gaming.

Samsung Odyssey 3D Specs

The two prototype screens on display were available in 27″ and 37″ sizes, and you can see the provided spec cards below. There’s no much info provided other than that they both offer a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution, 1ms G2G response time, a 165Hz refresh rate and support adaptive-sync for VRR, including AMD ‘FreeSync Premium’ certification. The smaller 27″ model is built around an IPS panel, while the larger 37″ model is a VA panel. Specs and details are still to be finalised, including the connectivity, so these could be subject to change. Expect more info on these at CES if they continue to be developed.
