At this year’s CES event in Las Vegas, Asus announced the release of several new ROG Strix gaming monitors in their range. Of particular interest was a couple of very large sized screens. Here’s a run down of the new 43″ ROG Strix XG438Q display.

The Strix XG438Q is 43″ in size with a 16:9 aspect ratio VA technology panel sporting a 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD resolution. It is being touted as “the World’s biggest and fastest 4K FreeSync 2 HDR gaming monitor” by Asus. It includes a 120Hz refresh rate, 4ms G2G response time spec, 90% DCI-P3 colour gamut and support for FreeSync 2 variable refresh rates for optimal gaming experience.

The screen is also certified to VESA’s DisplayHDR 600 scheme meaning that it should have a level of edge-lit local dimming and offer a moderate HDR experience. Coupled with the extended colour gamut already mentioned, the screen also has 10-bit colour depth support and a peak brightness of 600 cd/m2 for HDR content (450 cd/m2 typical brightness spec for SDR).

PiP and PbP modes are supported on this large screen format from two input sources. There are DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 and 2x USB 3.0 connections provided along with an audio input and headphone jack. The screen also includes 2x 10W stereo speakers.

The 43″ XG438Q is expected to be available in the spring of 2019 according to the press release. Pricing is currently unknown.

Of additional note since the original news piece is an included remote control, Asus’ “Gamesfast input technology” to help minimise input lag and front and back Aura lighting features. Peak brightness is also listed as 750 cd/m2 in HDR, as opposed to the original expectation of 600 cd/m2.

The spec is confirmed as follows: 3840 x 2160 resolution VA panel, 4000:1 contrast ratio, 450 cd/m2 SDR brightness (750 cd/m2 peak for HDR), 178/178 viewing angles, 1.07b colours, 90% DCI-P3 gamut. 3x HDMI 2.0 and 1x DisplayPort 1.4 connections are provided along with 2x USB 3.0, headphone jack and audio input. Only a tilt function is offered from the stand but there is VESA 100mm moutning support too.

Update 5/8/19 – according to the latest official information we have from Asus, the XG438Q is expected to be available from UK retailers around the end of August, with an expected MSRP of £1099
