Acer Nitro XV273X with World’s First 240Hz IPS Panel
We’ve been expecting to see 240Hz refresh rate IPS panels emerge for a little while now, since we knew about their development from AU Optronics based on their panel roadmaps. There are expected to be a 24.5″ and 27″ sized panel available for display manufacturers to use, with the former going in to mass production in July and the latter in August/September. We’ve now seen the first display appear on the market using one of these panels, which is Acer’s new Nitro XV273X. This is part of Acer’s Nitro gaming display lineup.
The new display is 27″ in size and will be the first to market using a 240Hz native refresh rate IPS technology panel. It offers only a 1920 x 1080 resolution which matches that of other 240Hz refresh rate screens based on TN Film technology. This is less of a strain of course on graphics cards and your system than a higher resolution option, and is well suited to competitive gaming. The screen supports adaptive-sync for variable refresh rates from both AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-sync systems.
Spec wise the screen offers a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 1ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 16.7m colour depth and a standard 99% sRGB colour gamut. The screen does carry the lowly VESA Display HDR400 certification but don’t expect any meaningful HDR experience here.
Quoting 1ms G2G response times seems to be the “new thing” for IPS panels, with LG also promoting the same spec for their forthcoming 27GL850 and 38GL950G displays. We would take these specs with a pinch of salt, as it remains to be seen under what conditions this is achieved (if indeed it is!). Hopefully the latest generation of panel can offer improved responsiveness and G2G performance to meet the hefty demands of the 240Hz refresh rate though.
2x HDMI 2.0 and 1x DisplayPort 1.4 connections are provided along with 4x USB 3.0 ports. Tilt and swivel adjustments are offered from the stand according to the press release.
Based on some early listings in Taiwan, the screen is expected to be available for around $430 USD. No official word though on regional pricing or release dates yet.
Update 4/9/19 – from the IFA 2019 press release this screen is also advertised with a 0.1ms “minimum” response time spec which is probably a little adventurous, but we do know that the screen will be certified under the “G-sync Compatible” scheme, and will also feature a VRB (Visual Response Boost) blur reduction backlight mode. Tilt and swivel adjustments are offered from the stand according to the press release. The Acer Nitro XV273 X will be available in EMEA in Nov 2019 starting at £399 GBP.
