MSI Announce the MPG 491CQPX QD-OLED, a 49″ Super Ultrawide Monitor with 240Hz

Following on from their MPG 491CQP monitor that we reviewed in May, MSI are now announcing their new MPG 491CQPX model at Gamescom next week in Cologne, Germany. This is another 49″ super-ultrawide screen with a 32:9 aspect ratio and a 1800R curvature. What makes this new X model different is that it has a 240Hz refresh rate instead of the 144Hz on offer from the previous model. That was actually one of the few criticisms we had about the old model when considering its market position relative to some other manufacturers. MSI are now releasing the X model to offer a higher refresh rate option.
MSI MPG 491CQPX Specs
The new screen is 49″ in size with a super-ultrawide format, 32:9 aspect ratio and a 1800R curvature. It’s built around a second generation Samsung QD-OLED panel (they had options in 144Hz and 240Hz available) although from MSI’s point of view, it’s a third generation for their OLED monitors.
It has a 5120 x 1440 resolution, 0.03ms G2G response time, 1.5 million:1 contrast ratio, 250 nits brightness (SDR), 178/178 viewing angles, 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut covering 99% DCI-P3 (as well as 146% sRGB and 98% Adobe RGB).
The 240Hz native refresh rate is supported by adaptive-sync for variable refresh rates from compatible NVIDIA and AMD systems. For HDR the screen offers a 1000 nits peak brightness spec (3% APL), and is certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black tier.

For connectivity there are 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.1 and 1x USB type-C (with DP Alt mode and 98W power delivery) offered. PiP and PbP modes are supported along with a KVM switch function. A headphone connection is also provided along with 2x USB data ports. The stand offers a decent range of tilt, height, swivel adjustments, but there is no rotate function given the curved screen format.
The screen has the standard semi-glossy screen coating from the QD-OLED panel. Expect the usual comprehensive set of OLED Care 2.0 features as on their other OLED monitors, along with a decent warranty that includes burn-in cover. The screen also has a fan-less design thanks to its custom heatsink and graphene film panel, and supports user-updatable firmware and their Gaming Intelligence app.
