The Philips 27M2N5500XD 1000Hz Dual-Mode Gaming Monitor Officially Arrives

We first brought you news of Philips astonishing 1000Hz gaming screen back in December last year, but we were unable to reveal too many details back then as it had only been talked about at an expo in China. We are therefore pleased to report that the official product page has now gone live, with this model finally zooming its way into the Chinese monitor market.
The Philips 27M2N5500XD, part of their Evnia 5000 gaming series, features a 27” ‘Fast IPS’ LCD panel offering a 2560 x 1440 resolution and 540Hz (overclocked) native refresh rate. If that’s not fast enough then a dual-mode function allows you to reach the massive speeds of 1000Hz when dropping to a lower 720p resolution (1280 x 720), improving motion clarity for gamers everywhere.
Philips 27M2N5500XD Specs

This display is 27″ in size, with a flat format, and is built around a ‘Fast IPS’ LCD technology panel. It offers a 2560 x 1440 (1440p, QHD) resolution, 109 PPI pixel density, 1ms G2G response time spec (0.3ms MPRT), 2000:1 contrast ratio, 350 nits brightness (SDR), 178/178 viewing angles, 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut covering 96% of the DCI-P3 and 100% of the sRGB colour spaces. It also comes with a factory calibrated Delta E<1 colour accuracy.

The 540Hz (OC) / 1000Hz dual-mode refresh rate is supported by adaptive-sync for VRR from compatible systems. Other gaming features include Low Input Lag mode, Stark ShadowBoost, Smart Crosshair and Smart Sniper. It also comes equipped with Philips Evnia Precision Centre software to allow you to customise your monitor to suit your gaming needs, helping you get the best of our your screen.

It has limited HDR support meeting the baseline VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification tier only and has a peak brightness of 500 nits.
This screen is designed with comfort in mind with Flicker-Free and LowBlue Mode technologies helping to reduce fatigue caused by long hours in front of the screen, and the ergonomic stand offers a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments.
Is IPS really going to be fast enough?
As we said in the past, we remain sceptical about whether these IPS LCD panels are really going to be able to keep up with the frame rate demands of 1000Hz+ when it comes to pixel response times, they will need to be able to reliably keep <1ms G2G for that, which seems very unlikely based on what we’ve seen from this technology in the past. The super-high refresh rates in the LCD space tend to be most effective on ageing TN Film panels, such as the wide range of 600Hz+ models we saw unveiled last year, with OLED panels really offering the best response times that make pushing for higher refresh rates viable. We will have to see how these perform once they are released and tested.
Connectivity

For connectivity there are 2x HDMI 2.1 ports, 1 x DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR tier not listed) and a headphone jack.
Availability and pricing
To date this screen has only appeared in China and we eagerly await further news about its general availability and pricing going forward.
