Samsung ViewFinity S85TH Launched with 40″ 5K2K 144Hz VA Panel and Thunderbolt 5 Hub
Samsung recently unveiled their new S85TH monitor, part of their ViewFinity S8 range which focusses on high resolution and enhanced productivity and aimed mainly at the professional market. This is a large 40” ultrawide curved VA LCD display with a 5120 x 2160 “5K2K” resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. It also offers Thunderbolt 5 connectivity offering 80 Gbps data transfer and up to 140W charging power.

The screen is 40” in size with a steep 1000R curvature and 21:9 aspect ratio. It is built around a VA technology LCD panel and offers an ultrawide 5120 x 2160 resolution, ~140 PPI pixel density, 4ms G2G response time spec, 21:9 aspect ratio, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 178/178 viewing angles, 350 nits brightness (SDR), 10-bit colour depth, including 1.07 billion colours, and a standard colour gamut covering 99% of the sRGB colour space.
The 144Hz refresh rate is supported by adaptive-sync for VRR from compatible systems and there is also certification under the AMD ‘FreeSync Premium’ scheme too. With no local dimming zones, HDR support is limited from a hardware point of view although there is support for HDR10 and HDR10+ input signals.
The stand offers a range of tilt, height and swivel adjustments to help you find your optimum viewing position. Adaptive Picture technology is also included which automatically adjusts the brightness and colour temperature for your environment thus affording it an Intelligent Eye Care certification from TÜV, and this, combined with Eye Saver Mode and Flicker-Free technologies help reduce eye strain and fatigue.
Connectivity
There is a whole host of connectivity options including 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.1, 1x Thunderbolt 5 input (with DP Alt mode, 140W power delivery and data) and 1x Thunderbolt 5 output (15W) for daisy chaining. It also offers an integrated KVM switch function and PiP/PbP support for handling multiple devices. In addition there are 5x USB Type-A and 1x USB-C data ports and an RJ45 Ethernet port. For audio the screen features 2x 5W integrated speakers and a headphone jack.
It also comes with Auto Switch+ so your monitor can detect when connected devices are turned on and instantly switches to the new source rather than having to search through multiple inputs.
Availability and pricing
We have started to see a few product pages appear in some European and Asian markets but we are yet to see it appear in the US or UK.
