LG 27GX790B is Unleashed with 27″ 540Hz 4th-Gen WOLED Panel and 720Hz Dual-Mode Support

Hot on the heels of the ViewSonic XG273F-2K-OLED is another high-end gaming monitor offering amazing speed and the fastest refresh rates available so far from any OLED monitor. The LG 27GX790B is part of LG’s UltraGear range and features a 27” screen built around LG Display’s 4th-Gen WOLED panel which incorporates their new 4-stack ‘Primary RGB Tandem’ panel structure. It also offers a 1440p resolution and a hefty 540Hz refresh rate.
If you need even faster speeds then a dual-mode function allows you to increase your refresh rate to a monstrous 720Hz (the highest currently in an OLED screen) when switching to a lower 720p / HD resolution.
LG 27GX790B Specs

This is a 27″ sized screen (26.5″ accurate) WOLED panel with a flat format, 2560 x 1440 resolution, 110 PPI pixel density, 0.02ms G2G response time spec, 1.5 million:1 contrast ration, 335 nits brightness (SDR), 178/178 viewing angles and a wide colour gamut covering 99.5% of the DCI-P3 colour space.
Gaming capabilities
The 540Hz refresh rate, which can be boosted to 720Hz using the dual-mode function, is supported by adaptive-sync for variable refresh rates from compatible systems, including from NVIDIA and AMD systems. It’s been certified under the NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ schemes as well.
Note that the LG product page incorrectly lists the dual-mode resolution as 1920 x 1080 @ 720Hz in one place, but elsewhere lists it (correctly) as HD @ 720Hz, meaning 1280 x 720 resolution.
Other gaming features include Black Stabiliser, Crosshairs and FPS Counter and in addition the monitor is VESA ClearMR 21000 certified for motion clarity performance. There’s no mention of any Black Frame Insertion (BFI) mode though on this model.

HDR support
For HDR it is certified under the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 tier and offers a peak brightness spec of 1500 nits (1.5% APL) thanks to its new 4th Gen WOLED panel. It also has an 800 nits brightness spec for 10% APL, and 335 nits for 100% APL.

Other features and stand ergonomics
There is also an LG Switch smart function which converts your screen into a hub for work, gaming and streaming. It also allows you to customise various settings such as image quality and brightness, then apply these settings with a hotkey depending on what’s on the screen.

The stand provides tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments, and the screen features hexagonal backlighting on the back. Various OLED Care features are also included to protect the panel from image retention and burn-in, and on top of this there is a 3-year warranty built in too.
Panel coating
The panel coating on this LG model is a standard matte anti-glare, as opposed to the glossy coating offered by Asus’ model, and seemingly also on ViewSonic’s recently launched alternative. This provides an alternative for those who want a matte coating that is more suited to brighter room conditions, and is better at handling glare and reflections than a glossy finish.
Connectivity

For connectivity there are 2x HDMI 2.1 ports, 1x DisplayPort 2.1 input (UHBR 13.5 – not enough to power the full spec without DSC) and a 4-pole sound and mic jack. In addition there are 2x USB 3.0 Type-A connections and 1x USB 3.2 Type-C connection (with DP Alt Mode). The screen also offers PiP/PbP support for handling multiple devices.
Availability and pricing
The LG 27GX790B has only been launched in China so far, but we hope to see it appear across the globe in the not too distant future, perhaps showcased at CES in January.
