Sony Announce their Own 27″ Gaming Monitor Designed for the PS5

Sony have announced this week their new gaming monitor, designed specifically for PlayStation 5 users. Built for desktop gaming with a PS5, the upcoming monitor “combines bold visuals and performance and includes a charging hook for the DualSense wireless controller” they say. The charging hook is the most unique feature of this screen, as otherwise it’s a fairly mid-tier spec by today’s standards from what we can tell so far.

Sony 27” Gaming Monitor Specs
Spec wise not much has been revealed so far. It’s 27″ in size and has a 2560 x 1440 (1440p, QHD) resolution, so unfortunately it cannot support 4K gaming resolutions natively. It is likely that it will accept a virtual 4K input signal, although this is not confirmed at the moment. The screen is LCD based using an IPS panel and has a 240Hz native refresh rate which is applicable for PC gaming only. The PS5 console can support up to 120Hz max, which this screen is capable of handling. VRR is also supported Sony say. It’s a shame this wasn’t an OLED monitor nowadays to support faster response times, better contrast and far better HDR support.
HDR support likely to be limited
HDR hardware capabilities are not specified at this time other than to say that there is “High Dynamic Range support with Auto HDR Tone Mapping that automatically adjusts HDR settings during setup on PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles, ensuring rich and vivid picture quality.” More details on HDR specs when we have them although we expect this means only very basic HDR input signal support with either very basic edge-lit local dimming or none at all. You’d think they would say if it featured a Mini LED backlight for instance or something more capable of creating a pleasing HDR experience.

Connectivity
The new PlayStation gaming monitor supports VESA mounting (size not listed) and also has a full suite of audio and connectivity options, including USB ports for your PlayStation Link adapter. There are 1x DisplayPort 1.4 and 2x HDMI 2.1 video inputs as well as 2x USB-A and 1x USB-C data ports and 1x headphone jack. The screen includes some built-in stereo speakers as well, although wattage is not confirmed.
