LG 27GP950 Announced as Successor to 27GN950, Now Including HDMI 2.1

LG have announced at their CES 2021 event the new UltraGear 27GP950 monitor. The successor to their flagship 27GN950 display we reviewed previously will offer largely the same specs and features, but this time with HDMI 2.1 connectivity added. This makes it a great option if you want to also connect a latest generation console like the PS5 or XBox Series X. The screen is 27″ in size with a 3840 x 2160 (4K) Nano IPS panel and a 160Hz maximum refresh rate. This offers a wide colour gamut covering 98% of the DCI-P3 colour space and includes some edge-lit local dimming for VESA Display HDR 600 certification. The screen has a 4-side borderless design still.

The specs and features should be largely the same as the existing 27GN950 so we would encourage you to read our detailed review of that model for more information. The 160Hz refresh rate on the existing model is only available over DisplayPort 1.4 as that is required, along with DSC (Display Stream Compression) to support the bandwidth necessary for 4K @ 160Hz. It is not clear whether this overclock mode will work over HDMI 2.1 as well (if you have an HDMI 2.1 graphics card) or whether you will be limited to the native 144Hz maximum. There is certainly sufficient bandwidth for it, but it may not be enabled or perhaps necessary when the HDMI 2.1 inputs are more aimed at support for the latest generation games consoles at 4K @ 120Hz. HDMI 2.1 inclusion will mean that HDMI-VRR is supported along with ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) for games consoles.

The screen supports adaptive sync and so can support VRR from both NVIDIA and AMD systems and like the current model should carry the G-sync Compatible and FreeSync Premium Pro certifications.

Since the screen will be based on the same LG.Display Nano IPS panel as the 27GN950 model we can confirm that the specs will offer a 3840 x 2160 resolution, 1ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness (600 cd/m2 peak for HDR), 178/178 viewing angles and 1.07b colour depth. There will be a wide colour gamut covering 98% of the DCI-P3 reference space. The screen comes factory calibrated and also supports hardware calibration support. The LG Sphere lighting system will also be included.

For connectivity there are 1x DisplayPort 1.4 (with DSC), 2x HDMI 2.1 (this is the main upgrade on this model), 2x USB 3.0 and a headphone jack, as you can see from the provided photo. The stand provides tilt, height and rotate adjustments.
