Dell Alienware AW2720HF Gaming Monitor with 240Hz IPS Panel
Showcased at this year’s Gamescom event was the new Alienware AW2720HF display from Dell, a new 27″ IPS monitor with 1080p resolution. Aimed firmly at gamers, this will be one of the first monitors on the market to offer an IPS panel with native 240Hz refresh rate. We have already seen Acer announce their Predator XV273K as well, so it looks like more 27″ 240Hz IPS options will be appearing in the coming months.

Dell now have an official spec page for the screen. It confirms that the screen will offer a 1ms response time (with overdrive), although given our recent testing of the LG 27GL850 which is marketed in this way, we would take that with a pinch of salt. It’s likely to be only achievable in the most extreme overdrive examples and with loads of overshoot. They say on the spec page: ” 1ms response. No gimmicks: A true 1ms response time with Overdrive blasts away blurs and provides fast, responsive gameplay.” – it remains to be seen if that is true!
AMD FreeSync is supported for variable refresh rates, which means the screen should also support NVIDIA G-sync thanks to the Jan 2019 driver updates.
We know that the screen is 27″ in size and will feature a 1920 x 1080 resolution. In other specs it offers a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles and an 8-bit colour depth. A standard 99% sRGB gamut is also confirmed on the Dell website.
Alienware Design and AlienFX Lighting
In regards to the design, Dell say: “In a return to form, Alienware has introduced the Legend Industrial Design. It is a new, bolder, sculpted, universal, minimal and iconic expression of the Alienware brand. The new stand is a space-saver, sliding under the edges of your gaming keyboard. It’s also engineered for cable management, with quick-access ports on the underside and a cable pass-through in the stand. Plus, the height adjustable tilt, pivot and swivel abilities mean you’re always positioned to game at your best.
Enhance your gaming experience with AlienFX—a fully customizable lighting system designed to bring you closer to the worlds you play in, with dynamic lighting effects tied directly to the in-game actioni and full RGB values. The monitor’s customizable lighting combined with your other AlienFX-enabled devices lets you personalize your entire battle station to reflect your style. Create and download unique themes effortlessly for over 145 different games.“
For connectivity there are 1x DisplayPort and 2x HDMI 2.0 offered, along with 4x USB 3.0, a headphone out and audio out.
The AW2720HF is expected to be available any time (originally listed for mid-September) and is available at $599.99 USD
Update 13/11/19 – the screen is available to order now from Amazon.com in the USA at a price of $449.99
