Asus Unveil Two New Dual-Mode Models with Higher Boost Rates

There was a time when ‘dual-mode’ simply meant you could double the refresh rate of your gaming display by lowering the resolution. However, we have seen a recent shift in dual-mode functionality where it is no longer just doubling refresh rates, but offering a much higher boost rate in some cases.

For example, Asus have recently revealed two dual-mode models, one in each of their ROG and TUF Gaming series, which push this refresh rate enhancement even further. These 27” ‘Fast IPS’ LCD technology monitors offer you the chance to triple or even quadruple the native refresh rate, so whether you are focusing on graphics and image detail or chasing higher frame rates and speed for competitive gameplay these models won’t make you compromise.

Asus ROG Strix XG27UCG2 Specs

The Asus ROG Strix XG27UCG2 is an update to their XG27UCG model and instead of just doubling your refresh rate, the dual-mode function here is capable of tripling your refresh rate from 160Hz at 4K (3840 x 2160) to 480Hz at FHD (1920 x 1080), delivering 3x the native refresh rate.

Full specs and a product page have not yet been revealed yet but we can tell you that it will include VRR technology (AMD ‘FreeSync Premium’ and NVIDIA ‘G-sync compatible’). It will also include Asus Smart Pixel technology which will help enhance every detail to deliver sharper visuals even at the lower resolution, whilst ROG Gaming AI technologies will improve your gaming experience and performance. Asus’ DisplayWidget Center support will also be available.

Connectivity options will include HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB Type-C connection (with DP Alt mode and 15W power delivery). A built-in phone holder will also feature for convenience whilst Aura Sync RGB lighting will illuminate your gaming set up and synchronise with other Aura Sync ROG gear.

Asus TUF Gaming VG27UQEL5A

Up next is the TUF Gaming VG27UQEL5A and this features a dual-mode function which quadruples your refresh rate from 75Hz at 4K (3840 x 2160) to 300Hz at FHD (1920 x 1080). Again, the full specs are scarce but we do know that the monitor will include a 0.3ms MPRT response time spec, adaptive sync VRR support (AMD ‘FreeSync Premium’ and NVIDIA ‘G-sync compatible’), and Asus’s ELMB SYNC technology for boosting motion clarity.

A wide colour gamut covering 95% of the DCI-P3 colour space and Asus’ Smart Pixel technology will be on hand to deliver exceptional image quality.

Neither of these screens were displayed at CES this year but we did see MSI feature their new MAG 271KPD7 model which includes a dual-mode function allowing you to boost your refresh rate 4x (‘quad-boost’) from 75Hz at 5K (5120 x 2880) to 300Hz at QHD (2560 x 1440).
