Asus ROG Strix XG27UQ with 4K at 144Hz with Display Stream Compression (DSC)

We’ve already seen one display from Asus announced featuring Display Stream Compression (DSC), allowing for the support of high resolutions, at high refresh rates from a single DisplayPort connection, and without the need for chroma sub-sampling. The 43″ XG43UQ was the first to be announced using this alternative compression technology. Asus have also showcased a smaller 27″ model at this year’s Gamescom event, the ROG Strix XG27UQ.

The XG27UQ will feature a 27″ IPS technology panel with 3840 x 2160 resolution. Support for 144Hz is made possible through DSC as we’ve said above, negating the need for the chroma sub-sampling that was necessary on previous Asus 4K @144Hz models like the ROG Swift PG27UQ. Adaptive-sync is supported to offer VRR from both AMD and NVIDIA systems.

The XG27UQ won’t offer the top-end FALD backlight that the PG27UQ had, instead opting for the modest (and largely meaningless) HDR400 certification, and supporting a peak brightness of 400 cd/m2. The screen will at least offer a wide gamut with reported 90% DCI-P3 coverage for improve colours in HDR content and gaming.

No confirmation of release date or price. More info as we get it.

Update 22/8/19 – according to some reports coming out of Gamescom this screen is expected to retail for 899 EUR and will be available in Q4 2019.
