MSI have recently announced a new 34″ ultrawide monitor in their Prestige series, aimed at home users and creative professionals. The PS341WU features a higher resolution though than most 34″ ultrawide screens, offering 5120 x 2160 instead of the traditional 3440 x 1440 (or sometimes even 2560 x 1080). It’s based on an IPS panel and features a fairly unusual design with a mixture of black, white, bronze and silver colours used. According to the MSI website “The MSI Prestige PS341WU was inspired by the combination of Western oil & Eastern ink painting. An asymmetrical circle and a curved line on the back perfectly blend with the symmetrical square on the front – integrate the viewing experience into the creators’ life.”

With the screen measuring 34″ in an ultrawide format, the 5120 x 2160 resolution gives a similar pixel density and height to a 27″ 4K screen (with 3840 x 2160), just with additional horizontal area provided as well. The IPS panel is from LG.Display’s Nano IPS generation, offering a wide colour gamut covering 98% of the DCI-P3 colour space.

Spec wise the screen offers an 8ms G2G response time, 60Hz refresh rate, 1200:1 contrast ratio, 450 cd/,2 brightness (600 cd/m2 peak for HDR), 178/178 viewing angles and a 10-bit colour depth. The screen is certified to the VESA DisplayHDR 600 standard, meaning it will offer some form of local dimming at least along with the colour space and colour depth support already mentioned.

The stand offers tilt, height and swivel adjustments. There are 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.0, USB type-C and 3x USB 3.2 ports offered along with a mic input, headphone jack and 3.5mm audio combo jack. Both PiP and PbP functions are supported too.

The PS341WU is expected to be released from September 2019 at $1299 USD.
