LG have this week announced the release of their forthcoming 49WL95 monitor, a massive 49″ ultrawide display with a high 5120 x 1440 resolution. This screen has a 32:9 aspect ratio, designed to replace cumbersome multi-screen setups aimed at image and video editing primarily, as well as being “a natural fit for those working in finance, IT, design and architecture where display accuracy and quality are required”. It is actually the equivalent of 2x 27″ monitors joined together, each with a 2560 x 1440 resolution.

We’ve seen a couple of other 49″ models announced already with this same 5120 x 1440 resolution, a significant step up from the original range of 3840 x 1080 resolution screens that have been around for a little while now. There are competing models being offered in the form of the Dell U4919DW and Philips 499P9H.

The 49WL95 features an IPS technology panel from LG.Display and offers a 3-side borderless design with a 3800R curvature. The official spec page is now available so we can confirm there is a 5ms G2G response time, 60Hz refresh rate, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 1.07b colour depth and 99% sRGB colour gamut. The press release talks about “HDR10” support but this is likely to be nothing more than an acceptance of an HDR signal input, with no real HDR benefits being offered by the screen as it lacks local dimming, an increased peak brightness and even the wider DCI-P3 colour space support.

To make the most of the incredibly expansive screen real estate, the LG UltraWide Monitor features a Picture-by-Picture mode to view content from multiple sources side-by-side and work with multiple applications simultaneously. Dual Controller Software allows connection to several devices all controllable via a single keyboard and mouse, working seamlessly with PBP to improve workflow and increase efficiency. With USB Type-C ports, users can transfer data and charge devices – even laptops – simultaneously.

The press release confirms the screen will also feature 2x HDMI and 1x DisplayPort connections, along with a 4 port USB 3.0 hub. 2x 10W speakers and an ambient light sensor are also included as additional features. The stand offers tilt, 110mm height and swivel adjustments.

Update 19/5/19: The screen is available now to buy. In the US it is available at around $1,350 USD, in the UK at around £1,599 GBP and in Europe at €1,649 Euro
