Apple Rumoured to be Working on 31.6″ 6K3K Display with Mini LED
In his detailed research notes outlining Apple’s plans for 2019, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that there were plans to develop an updated Mac Pro, including a new 31.6″ sized “Apple 6K3K” display. Apple had previously discontinued production of their Thunderbolt Display in 2019 and instead had been working on collaborations with other manufacturers like LG. This news looks like Apple might be venturing in to the display market again. Very little information was shared but he did say that it would feature “outstanding picture quality thanks to its adoption of the Mini LED-like backlight design.”
The new screen is expected to have a resolution of around 6144 x 3072 which at 31.6″ in size, is about 217 pixels per inch (ppi). For comparison, the
15-inch MacBook Pro has 221 ppi, and the iMac 5K has 218 ppi.
We’ve seen some other displays announced already with Mini LED backlights, which are the next stage up from a FALD backlight. For instance there is the Asus ProArt PA32UCX which has a 32″ panel and over 1000 dimming zones. Mini LED will provide the potential for a better HDR experience and more control over local dimming, so it will be interesting to see how thing develop with this new Apple display.
The screen is expected to be available later in 2019 but we will update this news piece with more information and specs as we see them.
