Asus VG248QG 24″ Gaming Screen with 165Hz and 0.5ms Response Time
We’ve already seen Asus announce new gaming monitors in their range late last year with a 24.5″ sized VG258QR and then this week also a 27″ sized VG278QR. There is also a slightly smaller 24″ model available in the form of the VG248QG. The VG248QG offers a 165Hz refresh rate, 0.5ms response time and as well as supporting AMD FreeSync, it is apparently also officially certified as G-sync Compatible by NVIDIA. Asus say they are currently the only company subjecting monitors to a two-stage certification process that entails in-house testing and subsequent validation by NVIDIA to guarantee compatibility with thousands of graphics cards. While the 24.5″ and 27″ models are listed already on NVIDIA’s website as ‘G-sync Compatible’, this 24″ VG248QG has yet to be added.
The 24″ VG248QG screen is based on a TN Film panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. The high 165Hz refresh rate is supported by Adaptive Sync, offering support for AMD FreeSync as well as the new NVIDIA G-sync Compatible programme. The panel used comes from AU Optronics and is part of their latest 0.5ms response time generation, trying to push response times even more than the wide range of 1ms panels already available. It remains to be seen of course how these perform in practice.
In other specs there is a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 170/160 viewing angles, 6-bit+FRC colour depth and standard sRGB gamut. AMD FreeSync is supported with a range of 40 – 165Hz (with LFC for below that). Asus have also added their own motion blur reduction strobed backlight system, dubbed ELMB (Extreme Low Motion Blur). Oddly the 24.5″ and 27″ models are promoted by Asus as featuring their “GameFast Input Technology”, designed apparently help minimise input lag. That is not listed on the webpage for this VG248QG, and marked with an “x” on the press release, so perhaps it’s not needed or has just been left off.
Connectivity wise there are DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4, DL-DVI (you don’t see DVI much nowadays!), a headphone output connection is also provided. The stand offers a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate functions. 2x 2W integrated speakers are also included.
The VG248QG is supposed to be available during April although it is yet to appear on any main Amazon regional sites as far as we can tell. No confirmation of price yet.
