Samsung Odyssey G9 and G7 with 49″/32″/27″ Panels, 240Hz Refresh Rate and 1000R Curvature
Samsung has just introduced its new line-up of groundbreaking curved Odyssey gaming monitors at CES 2020. The new line-up has been completely re-imagined with gamers in mind, including radically new curved displays and industry-leading performance features for a whole new way to game. There are 3 new screens being showcased. The G9 which is 49″ in size and G7 models which are available in 32″ and 27″. These new models have a deeper curvature than typical curved screens at 1000R. They also boast a 1ms response time spec and impressive 240Hz “RapidCurve” refresh rate.
All the new Odyssey monitors will feature adaptive sync support, allowing for variable refresh rates from both AMD and NVIDIA systems. The screens are currently in the process of being officially certified by NVIDIA as G-sync Compatible according to the press release.
G9 – 49″ ultrawide
The G9 is 49″ in size, and like their current C49RG90 model that we are currently reviewing, will offer a 5120 x 1440 resolution and 32:9 aspect ratio, the same as dual 27″ 2560 x 1440 models joined side by side. The new G9 will double the refresh rate though of the current model from 120Hz to 240Hz! The G9 is still based on a VA technology panel and so it remains to be seen how efficiently this kind of panel tech can keep up with the high frame rate demands of 240Hz, and if response times are truly fast enough. A 1ms response time spec is quoted but is probably unrealistic in practice.
The VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification remains from the older model, including a 1000 cd/m2 peak brightness and wide colour gamut thanks to the use of Quantum Dot coating (what Samsung call their QLED backlight).
The G9 has a striking new design with a glossy white exterior and a futuristic infinity core lighting glowing rear core, which includes 52 colors and five lighting effect options. The design and lighting effects stand out from the competition and complement any gaming setup.
G7 – 27″ and 32″ Models
The two G7 screens will feature the same 1000R curvature, 1ms response time and 240Hz refresh rate of the G9 model, just in smaller screen sizes of 27″ and 32″. Both will offer a 2560 x 1440 resolution VA panels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. They have VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification which will include 600 cd/m2 peak brightness and a wide colour gamut thanks to the QLED backlight.
The G7 has been completely redesigned with a sleek, matte black exterior and color-changing rear core lighting that can remain static or dim during game play, as well as change colors based on gamers’ preferences. In addition, the G7 has added dynamic shapes and lighting to the monitor`s front bezel.
