AOC are soon to release a new model in their AGON gaming series of displays, the AG271FZ2. This model features a 24.5″ sized TN Film technology panel with 1920 x 1080 resolution, along with a 240Hz refresh rate and FreeSync variable refresh rate support.

AOC even advertise a 0.5ms MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time) spec for this screen which relates to the fact that a strobing blur reduction backlight will be available. This is listed as “MBR” in the specs for “Motion Blur Reduction”. We discussed recently some of the issues we have with manufacturers advertising rather meaningless MRPT specs, and not including traditional G2G figures to make it possible for consumers to compare screens. Remember, you can’t achieve this MPRT figure unless you are using the blur reduction mode, and you can’t use that mode if you wanted to use FreeSync/G-Sync instead! It seemed bad enough when everyone used the blanket “1ms” spec to signify that a blur reduction backlight was available, even if in reality a true 1ms MPRT wasn’t achieved quite. It looks like we might see a race to the bottom on sub-1ms MPRT specs in the future, making it even harder for consumers to understand differences between different models when it comes to gaming performance and response times.

In other specs the 24.5″ sized screen uses a TN Film technology panel and offers a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 170/160 viewing angles. There is support for refresh rates up to 240Hz along with FreeSync and G-sync VRR support.

The screen apparently has a factory calibration too with dE <2 offered. There are 1x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI 2.0, 1x HDMI 1.4 and even an old-school Dual-link DVI and D-sub are provided for connectivity. 2x 3W speakers are integrated in to the screen along with a USB hub with 4 ports. There are also an audio input, headphone output, mic in and mic out jacks. The stand has a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments available.

No word on release dates or prices yet.
